Barbagia

A land that stayed wild

Barbagia is the oldest, most authentic Sardinia: granite and limestone mountains, holm oak and cork forests, the Pratobello plateau and the skylines of Gennargentu and Supramonte. Life here still follows the seasons, the shepherds and the village feasts.

Gennargentu

The island's highest peaks, a short drive away.

Supramonte

Gorges, canyons and trails around Orgosolo, Oliena and Dorgali.

Gulf of Orosei

Its famous coves less than an hour by car.

  • Su Nuraxi, Barumini

The island's most famous Bronze Age nuraghe, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • Gennargentu

Sardinia's highest mountains, topped by Punta La Marmora at 1,834 m.

  • Cala Goloritzé

A limestone spire and turquoise water in the Gulf of Orosei, under an hour away.

  • Capo Caccia, Alghero

Sheer sea cliffs and Neptune's Grotto.

Culture & traditions

Mamoiada, village of masks and wine

Mamuthones and Issohadores

Mamuthones and Issohadores

On 17 January, for Sant'Antonio Abate, and at Carnival, the Mamuthones march in black wooden masks, sheepskins and heavy cowbells, led by the Issohadores. An ancestral rite that still shakes the village today.

Museum of Mediterranean Masks

A short walk from the centre, the museum tells the story of the Mamuthones and the ritual masks of the Mediterranean, from Sardinia to the Balkans.

Cannonau of Mamoiada

Cannonau of Mamoiada

Bush-trained vines, granite soils and dozens of small family wineries: Mamoiada is one of the capitals of Cannonau, among Italy's most celebrated wines.

Cortes Apertas

Cortes Apertas

Every autumn the villages of Barbagia open their courtyards: artisans, bread, cheese, sweets and wine welcome visitors into the old houses. In Mamoiada it is a celebration of the whole community.
